If you are looking to go through Fall recruitment this year but have some hesitancy around the experience then this post is written for you! Let me help ease your stress about one of the most important experiences I've had at my time at the University of Arizona, and that is rush!!!
Recruitment is an exciting and emotional time, filled with new people, big decisions and the chance to find your place on campus. This guide is here to help you stay grounded, confident and authentic throughout the process. You don’t need to be perfect—just prepared and true to yourself.
1. Take Care of Yourself—Rush is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
Recruitment days are packed with walking, talking and outfit changes. If you’re not prioritizing rest and wellness, burnout can hit fast.
Simple ways to protect your energy:
-
Get plenty of sleep—don’t stay up rehashing every convo.
-
Eat real meals. You’ll need more than a granola bar.
-
Hydrate—your voice and body will thank you.
Takeaway: Reset daily. Even extroverts need quiet time to recharge.
2. Wear What Makes You Feel Good
You don’t need a brand-new wardrobe to stand out. What matters most is feeling confident and comfortable in what you wear.
Tips for choosing outfits:
-
Stick to what feels like you. If you never wear heels, skip them!
-
Dress for the weather. Some rounds might be outside.
-
Test outfits in advance. Make sure you can move comfortably.
Takeaway: Trendy isn’t necessary—confidence is!
3. You’re Not Supposed to Know Everything
It’s easy to feel lost in the process, but guess what? Recruiters are trained to guide you.
Remember:
-
Ask questions if you're unsure—no one expects you to know it all.
-
This isn’t a job interview. Be real, not rehearsed.
-
Go with the flow. Trust that things will work out as they should.
Takeaway: Relax, show up as yourself and let the process unfold! You've got this.
4. Be Yourself—That’s How You Find Your People
There’s no “perfect” answer during recruitment. The best way to find your fit is by being authentic.
How to have real conversations:
-
Speak naturally—no need to be overly animated.
-
Share personal details. They help build genuine connections.
-
Don’t stress on awkward moments. They happen.
Takeaway: Chapters aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for real connection.
5. Keep Your Opinions to Yourself
Every PNM’s experience is different. Sharing too much can influence others—or confuse your own gut feelings.
Why staying quiet matters:
-
Your journey is your own.
-
Feelings about chapters can change day to day.
-
Gossip spreads. Always stay respectful.
Takeaway: Need to vent? Talk to a friend from another school or your Rho Chi. This will help you vent in a way that doesn't affect others experiences and help you navigate your own feelings.
6. Take Notes After Each House
The days blur together fast. Taking quick notes helps you remember how you actually felt.
What to jot down:
-
Your first impression—comfortable, energized, unsure?
-
Memorable convos or connections.
-
The vibe—did the energy feel right for you?
Takeaway: These notes will help when it’s time to make decisions.
My final thought is, recruitment isn’t about being perfect. It’s about finding where you feel most at home. So take care of yourself, trust your gut and show up as the best version of you—that’s more than enough to find a house that is right for you. All you have to do now is go for it!
